Some waterfront residences in the Bosphorus  hosted important events of Ottoman history. This building is one of the them too.

Recaizde Mahmut Ekrem who was owner of this waterfront residence, was one of the famous writers of Tanzimat period and his Car Love (Araba Sevdası in Turkish ) book was famous.

Recaizde Mahmut Ekrem often hosted period writers in this building, so it was famous as writers’ waterfront residence during his period. The literary discussions here has spawned a literary movement. We call this movement Servet-i Fünun which is modern a stream of literary in early 20th.

Recaizde Mahmut Ekrem had to leave from this waterfront residence because of a unfounded intelligence during the reign of Sultan Abdulhamid II. According to intelligence, he was trying to depose the Sultan.

This waterfront residence located in Yeniköy, consists three parts. In the photo, the selamlık is on the left, the outbuilding is on the right, the harem is in the middle.
